Jodha-Akbar - a cinematic experience par excellence |

If its been a long time since you have watched a movie in a theater, on the big screen, here is a movie that will make your wait worthwhile. Jodha-Akbar is a movie that will make you fall in love with the movies...all over again. Ignore all the comments/reviews about "too long", "historical errors", "insulting to rajputs" etc. Forget the historical inaccuracies..just go watch it for the movie experience! In fact it does a lot more to glorify the Rajput valor and self-esteem. Length of the movie? yes..it is a little over 3 hrs; but you won't even realize it. The movie just draws you into its beautiful web (mughal style)and doesn't let you go till the end. It is a cinematic masterpiece from Asutosh Gowarikar. I have been a huge fan of Asuotosh's work since Lagaan days. In fact I loved Swades as well (as I said in my earlier blogs..one sensible acting job form Shahrukh). He is one of the very few sensible film makers who can touch a chord. So I was not expecting any thing less. Every frame in the movie is meticulously crafted. Of course..The director has always made the right moves in terms of casting and crew. Rahman had scored music for both of his earlier movies and we all know what Rahman can do on a grand stage such as this one. As I say always..Rahman's music grows on you. If Khwaja ..Mere Khwajah enchants you with sufi style magic (the picturization is too good as well), Jashn-e-bahara and "lamhoh ke daman meh" will take you on a melodious journey and "Azeem shahensah" just makes your heart race with heart-pounding beats and fantastic picturization. The more you hear the more you want it. The background score rocks as well. The great aspect of the music is...you love it more when you actually watch the songs rather than just listening to them outside. Coming to the cast..Master stroke. When the movie was being made I always used to say "man..he should not have picked Aishwarya. Dunno if she can do such a heavy acting kind of role". But I take back my words. She was perfect..for the first time she did some sensible acting and the director deserves credit for tapping, her whatever little acting talent, in a fantastic way. The rest of the cast is good. Last but not least...Hrithik. He is simply superb. The ace. I cannot think of any other actor in Bollywood who can play Akbar. He just leaves you spellbound with his histrionics. I can imagine the kind of hard work he must have done to walk and talk like the greatest emperor of the Mughal Empire. He deserves standing ovation for this one. There were times in the past when I could not stand his mod accented "Auntiji,,UncleJi's.."in stupid karan johar style puppy-romance movies. But he has come a long way and he certainly is a director's actor and if the director is talented enough, like Asutosh, he can bring out the best in him. Coming to the sets, fight sequences..well..you just have to watch it. I can't do justice with my words. If you are going to watch one movie in theaters this year (and the year has just started..so it is pretty big statement)its got to be this one. Go! Kick back..buy some pop corn and enjoy the grandeur of the Moghul empire as it unfolds in front of you..and if you are lucky enough to have a brother who can get you tix for the IMAX version you are in for one heck of a ride. The first thought that entered my mind as I stepped out of the show..when can I watch it again? |

All Hail the People's car - TATA's 1 Lakh car to be presented today |

One of the most awaited automobile inventions in recent years, probably one of the biggest stories in general, the TATA's 1-LAKH CAR is being unveiled today in Pragati Maidan at the Annual Auto Expo amid high fanfare and heavy security. Though it may take a few more months for the car to be ready for public purchase the anticipation and anxiety that people have been experiencing has reached a feverish pitch. If the car lives up to any amount of the hype that it is creating, it would turn the auto industry upside down. Imagine all those two-wheelers you see on the city streets being replaced with this new vehicle. Welcome to the Rush Hour in high definition format!! As is the case with any new product or invention there are always two sides to the story. While some of the auto makers have welcomed the launch most of them have scoffed at it saying this will bring a very primitive, unsafe and environmentally harmful product to the road. They say though the price-conscious consumer may lap it up initially, eventually he/she will run into huge maintenance issues due to poor quality of the materials used in order to keep the manufacturing costs down. Apart from that the environmental damage will be huge. However Ratan Tata, the head of TATA Group, who took huge personal interest in his company's innovation has gone public in stating that the car will meet all the safety norms and environmental norms. Now that would be something all the auto makers would like to know how. No matter on what side of the line you are, it is impossible to not be eager to get your eyes on the People's Car. But thats not going to be easy. For the people's car is being treated like a VVIP, with Z-plus security keeping a fierce watch on it. If that doesn't deter you, the company has employed the services of bouncers and bodyguards, including the formidable Shamser Singh Pehelwan, who looks quite capable of carrying the car all by himself from Pune to Delhi if need be. As he assured us, in chaste Haryanvi, he won't blink before removing troublemakers from the scene, should there be one. Sources close to the company say that a crowd of about 1,500, including media persons and guests are expected at the unveiling of the car. Kamal Nath, Union minister of commerce & industry, Dr Sabyasachi Sen, industry secretary of the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation and MB Rao, managing director (WBIDC) will be among those present. Tata Motors has made sure the invitation to witness this ‘miracle' reached its contemporaries, including the people who scoffed at the idea to begin with. About 250 international journalists are also expected to relay the event across the world. The last few weeks have seen a number of emails speculating on the appearance, specifications and even the name of the car. But if, like Ratan Tata, you have been waiting for the last five years, a few more hours is not too much to ask for. |
