The first authentic Indian team took part at the 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games in athletics and wrestling.

A National Olympic Committee was finally formed in 1927.

India’s greatest successes at the Olympics have come in men’s hockey. They won every men’s title from 1928 to 1956. In 1960 they reached the final but lost to Pakistan to end the sequence.

India’s first gold medal winning squad at the Amsterdam Olympic Games in 1928 included legendary hockey player Dhyan CHAND, known as the “ wizard of hockey� who won three consecutive gold medals.

Till now, India has won only 26 medals. Compare it with the 1143 medals won by the Germany, which is of the size of RAJASTHAN.

What is the possible reason to such a disastrous performance?

In India, except for the cricket there is hardly any game which has such resources and fan following. On winning silver medal Sushil Kumar got around 3 crores as gift from various governments.But wont it be better if government has spent this amount on the training of such sports persons. No doubt India has alot of talent, but the proper nurturing of the talent is important.

In swimming heats, Indian swimmer finishes last, that too with the last margin. In athletics, there is hardly any player who can break its jinx of winning a medal in racing events. This is because in India there is less availability of synthetic tracks and players are made to train on the traditional mud tracks.

The neglect towards sports can be seen from the school level where sports are mere obligation and are played as a formality.

For a country starved of Olympics medals, even 6 seems to be a big number, but think that for the country with 2nd largest population,     6 medals don’t weigh much.

So every Indian must strive to revive the spirit of sports. If due importance is given to each sport, then surely from next Olympics India’s ranking could be within 10 and then only the dream of  Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Ajay Maken of winning 25 medals in the 2020 olympics can come true.
